THE NCSL BLOG

By Jane Carroll Andrade

Julie Lays almost didn’t open the email. She thought it might be spam. As managing editor of State Legislatures magazine, she—like most of us—is a victim of daily Inbox overload. But “You’re a finalist!” in the subject line caused her to pause before hitting the delete button. Good thing. The email was from Folio magazine, informing Julie that State Legislatures was still in the running for the magazine industry’s prestigious annual Eddie & Ozzie Awards!

SLCover320State Legislatures’ February cover story, “Legally Green,” about the ramifications of legalizing marijuana in Colorado and Washington, was selected as one of five finalists in the editorial category of single article in a nonprofit publication. It was one of more than 2,300 entries in what is the largest awards program in the magazine industry, recognizing “the very best in editorial and design.” NCSL’s magazine is in great company. Finalists in other categories include National Geographic, Architectural Digest, Sports Illustrated, Forbes and the New York Times magazine. The winners and honorable mentions will be recognized at an awards breakfast in New York City Dec. 5.

“Legally Green” was written by frequent State Legislatures contributor Suzanne Weiss, a Denver-based freelance writer. The magazine staff edited it, made it shine with interesting sidebars and a clever headline, and directed the design by graphic artist Bruce Holdeman.

As Julie can attest, editing a magazine that’s published 10 times a year is a job that never lets up. And while she may not have time to read every email, she doesn’t give an inch on quality. So congratulations, Julie, you deserve the recognition. And kudos to all the NCSL staff who contribute to the organization’s flagship publication. We’ll send you an email if we win.
