NCSL Foundation for State Legislatures

Overview

The Foundation for State Legislatures was created in 1982 by the National Conference of State Legislatures, the nation’s preeminent bipartisan organization dedicated to serving the lawmakers and staffs of the nation’s 50 states, territories, and commonwealths. The Foundation is sponsored by a distinguished group of leaders who represent the nation’s most prestigious and influential corporations, unions, and organizations. It is committed to the important work of strengthening America’s legislatures, counteracting cynicism and distrust of the legislative process, and helping lawmakers confront and solve the critical issues of our time through a public-private dialogue.

The NCSL Foundation for State Legislatures is a nonprofit tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation that offers opportunities for businesses, national associations, nonprofit organizations, and unions seeking to improve the state legislative process and enhance NCSL's services to all legislatures.

The Foundation’s volunteer Board of Directors is composed of corporate and union executives, as well as state legislative leaders and senior legislative staff. The Foundation is dedicated to  improving public outreach and education and supporting ethics training. The Foundation’s core mission is to support the Center for Ethics in Government and the Women's Legislative Network. The Foundation also raises money to support special projects of the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The Foundation provides opportunities throughout the year for informative discussions on major state issues. Supporters of the Foundation may work with NCSL on public-private partnerships that create additional resources for state legislators and senior staff. NCSL believes that good government takes into account all voices, including those of the private sector; however, Foundation sponsors do not participate on NCSL’s Executive Committee, nor do they vote on NCSL’s policy positions.

Foundation sponsors receive a number of benefits. Learn more about them here
