State Legislative Bill Tracking and Update Services
(Single-State Bill Tracking)
Last update: March 16, 2009
Every state offers free public access to bill status and/or bill text via the Internet. Increasingly, however, legislatures are offering online tools that make it easy to track bills and keep up with legislative proceedings. Internet users can sign up for e-mail notifications when actions are reported on bills of interest. At least 21 states offer this type of free e-mail subscription service. In addition to bill tracking services, several states provide e-mail notifications of other types of legislative information.
Other states provide for bill tracking through the creation of personalized lists or customized web pages that can be viewed on the legislative website.
Some states offer enhanced bill tracking information for a fee–providing more features, detailed information or real-time updates.
A growing number of legislatures are providing updates via RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary), a service that alerts users to new content on the web, such as committee notices, new actions on bills or news updates.
