This session will address issues related to an individual's ability to receive appropriate mental health treatment. The session will include a discussion of changes to the mental health system over the last few decades, and in light of those changes, methods to ensure successful access to and continuation of treatment.

Mental Health Treatment: Balancing Help for the Individual and the Community, Boston, MA; August 5, 2007  Are the current mechanisms of screening and entry into mental health treatment adequate to meet society's needs and protect the individual? This session will examine best practices and aid state legislators in crafting legislation to revise their state systems.

Adolescent Development and Mental Health, Washington D.C.; April 19, 2007 

Learn about new research on adolescent development and what those findings suggest for juvenile justice policy. Explore the prevalence of mental health issues among court-involved youths and learn how juvenile justice and mental health systems can best respond.

Promoting Children’s Mental Health, Chicago, IL; December 7, 2005

This meeting addressed ways in which state legislators can promote children’s healthy mental development in their states, and what programs work to treat children with emotional disturbances.  Presentation topics included financing strategies for public children’s mental health services, evidence-based treatments, mental health promotion in schools and teen suicide prevention. 

Caring for the Most Vulnerable:  Medicaid and Mental Health, Washington, DC;  April 15-16, 2005

 

 

This meeting focused on the increased collaboration of Medicaid and mental health resources, with a special focus on children’s mental health services. Presentation topics included detecting untreated mental health disorders, providing effective children’s mental health services through Medicaid, maintenance of Medicaid eligibility after institutionalization, issues in cost and utilization of psychotropic drugs and the impending impact of the Medicare Modernization Act on dual eligibles with a mental illness.

This presentation, given at the Florida Mental Health Institute's 21st Annual Research Conference, highlights recent state legislative actions to address the problem of unregulated residential treatment programs for children and adolescents.

Sharing of Health Information: Federal Privacy Restrictions and State Initiatives (October, 2007)

In response to the tragedy at Virginia Tech, a special group of legislators and stakeholders has been convened in Maryland to examine the states' laws surrounding access to firearms, mental health and privacy. This presentation highlights the federal framework of HIPAA and FERPA within which states must operate, and introduces examples of state legislation limiting access to firearms by people with mental health conditions.

Involuntary Outpatient Commitment Legislation: State Perspectives, July 20, 2007

This presentation for the Virginia House of Delegates Health, Welfare and Institutions Committee provides an overview of state involuntary outpatient commitment legislation.
