Illinois Enacts Contribution Limits
Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed SB 1466 in early December, making Illinois the second state to enact limits on campaign contributions during 2009. Just four states remain with no limits on contributions to candidates. More.

Citizens United v. F.E.C.

The United States Supreme Court today issued a landmark campaign finance ruling that permits corporations to spend freely in support or opposition of candidates. In its long-awaited opinion on Citizens United v. FEC, the court lifted the federal ban on corporate spending for electioneering communications, but left intact the ban on direct corporate and union giving to candidates. More.

Washington Felon Voting Law Unconstitutional
On January 5, 2010, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Washington's ban on voting by incarcerated felons violated civil-rights protections.

Oregon Voters Approve Tax Increases
January 27, 2010
Oregon voters yesterday approved two bills passed by the Legislature last session to raise personal income taxes on high income earners, and minimum corporate and business taxes. The votes were triggered by a popular referendum, a process that allows citizens to petition to demand a popular vote on bills passed by the Legislature.
