Maine's Indian Legislators Acknowledged During Roll Call

Since the 1800s, the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Tribes of Maine have each had one representative in the House of Representatives.  These representatives did not have a seat on the floor, did not vote and did not have their names included on the roll call board.

Some changes were made during the 2009 session, however, when Tribal Rep. Donald Soctomah (Passamaquoddy) and Tribal Rep. Wayne Mitchell's (Penobscot) names were recognized with all the other lawmakers on the roll call board.  Not only are they officially recognized on the roll call, but they can now voice their opinions on matters that come before the Legislature.
