State Budget Update: April 2009
The state fiscal situation is growing increasingly dire. As revenue shortfalls mount, budget gaps are swelling—in some cases to staggering levels. The only bright spot is the onset of federal stimulus funds provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). Without that money, state finances would be even more dismal. State Tax Performance Through April 2009
The national recession is pummeling state revenues. Those states with heavy reliance on personal income taxes are experiencing deep declines, especially in their April 2009 collections. But other major taxes are faltering, too. Even the handful of states that have weathered the economic decline reasonably well are starting to report adverse revenue developments. More.

Fiscal Year 2010 Budget Status
Forty-six states begin their new fiscal year on July 1, 2009—a particularly important date as states finalize their FY 2010 budgets. As of June 26, 2009, 32 states have finalized their budgets with an additional six legislatures having approved their FY 2010 budgets but still awaiting executive action on them. More.
