Spotlight:State Budget Update

The latest state budget update report from the National Conference of State Legislatures paints a bleak picture for FY 2010, FY 2011 and possibly beyond. States already have closed a monumental gap of more $102 billion for FY 2009. The outlook for FY 2010 is $121.2 billion based on projections by 42 states and Puerto Rico. NCSL has compiled an interactive map to show the gaps for the next two fiscal years.

The only bright spot is the arrival of federal stimulus funds that will pump billions into the states. NCSL has been closely following the package and has an array of resources available.

NCSL has compiled a series of tables that document the measures, both proposed and enacted, that states are taking to close their budget gaps. NCSL also is keeping track of state stimulus oversight efforts intended to ensure the money is being spent approrpiately.
